Dr. appt vent... (semi-long)

So, you gals know I've been working out and dieting, etc... for 3 months... with NO weight loss and some inches gone...  I should be down at least 15-20 lbs by now unless... there's a problem.

I decide to go see about a thyroid test... I take with me my workout schedule, my diet-itemized w caloric stuff... and visit el doctor last week... (Side note: I had lost over 40 lbs a few years ago doing WW and working out much less-it was easy back then.  I know my portion control. I know what's what-for the most part.)

El D sits me down-glances at my sheets... asks a few questions... checks my throat, ears, etc... and says-yeah, here's a script to get bloodwork done, but I think you have a prob w portion control.  (gets out his little iphone and types in...) I think you should be eating 1600 calories (ok, mister, I am doing The Daily Plate which shows this)... and, let's see... you can use this app (ok, I have no Iphone, buddy) and plug in your food (which I do on TDP-see the sheets you just ignored??!)...

I did forget to tell him I am tired a lot-which is one thing of hypothyroidism, but I'm getting the test done, anyway... my BP was slightly higher-prob stress... , but I left there feeling way peeved at how I was treated... like I am a complete idiot.

So, now I get to 'fast'-cause he wants to check cholesterol... and get bloodwork done. Maybe Fri... (I had only seen this doc once before... )  I am glad there are other docs in that practice cause I'm done w that man... Glad he has his iphone as a toy...

  • That's really obnoxious.  But, I'm sorry to say that I don't think his reaction is all that uncommon...I've gotten the same thing from a few different docs.  Sometimes I feel like when it comes to weight loss, doctors just automatically think you're eating too much and/or not exercising instead of actually listening to what you're saying.  I feel ya Sad  See how your blood work goes.  And, if the blood work still doesn't show anything, you may want to ask for more sensitive thyroid tests (I think the usual one docs request doesn't give a full or as detailed picture of the thyroid as you may need...not positive, Breanne would probably know since she works in med).  Definitely be your own health advocate if you feel that something's off, because no one else will.  And definitely see another doc in that practice!  KUP!

  • Ugh...majorly frustrating.  As if you would be there for no reason.  Is this a general practioner or an endo?
  • Ew, if my doctor whipped out his iphone I would be seriously pissed.

just a reg family doctor... my PA left that practice-and she was great!

Thanks gals!  I just have to get the work done and take it from there...  Even my trainer thinks something's wrong-ok, she's not a doc, but she knows I went from nothing to a lot.  Will KYP!

  • You're paying dearly with your time and money for a highly educated, specialized doctor who is pulling out an iPhone!?!

    That is BS.

    This.

  • Ugh.  That is so frustrating when the doc won't listen to you.  After your bloodwork you'll know more about the situation.  If everything looks ok - it might be worth talking to a real weight loss clinic (not a diet program - since you already know how to diet) for more assesments on your metabolism and how your body deals with the food.  It could be something less "medical" than a thyroid issue.

In my case, the thyroid tests showed nothing.   My doc's conclusion was just that my metabolism sucks and I need bariatric surgery so my portion size can be reduced even smaller than what I "should" eat.  he didn't offer up any other advice than surgery - which royally annoyed me.  He also told me I couldn't get pregnant...I did - a month later.

I hope you are able to reach your goal soon!

  • If my dr did that, I woulda gone BSC in the office. What a douche.

Grr...hopefully the bloodwork will come back to show there is a problem (not that I wish for you to have a problem, but it would give you answers).

Also hoping you get to see one of the different docs on your next visit.

Agree.  I would have been majorly ticked off.
