2brides, I'd love some advice from a planning expert!

We're thinking of going in the next year or so, mainly to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I'm thinking maybe a day or two there and a day at WDW. I've been once (in summer!) and used to live in Georgia and know I want to avoid that season. Otherwise, when are the best times of year to go?

Any suggestions on where to stay?

Any good advice for searching for vacations/deals?

Ohh?my favorite topic.   We?ve been several times in the Jan/February timeframe and had a great time (although avoid MLK and Presidents Day weekends.)  The weather can vary (I know they had a cold winter this year) ? but we?ve typically had temps in the  low-mid 70s during the day and mid-upper 60s at night. Not swimming weather (although you do see people swimming!) ? but cool enough so you don?t sweat while you walk through the parks (I HATE sweating.)   If you would rather go in warmer months ? Septembe/early October (post Labor Day can be somewhat lighter in terms of crowds ? but can also be really hot (90s.) March/April is great weather but also spring break time ? and it can get crowded. Do not go at Christmas. It is a cluster*^@#.  We went about 11 years ago and it wasn?t too bad. My parents went last year and said it was the worst trip of their lives (they?ve been 30+ times.) They typically have to close the parks due to capacity.

For Disney and where to stay you basically have 3 options 1) Disney property 2) hotel off property and 3) condo off property.  All 3 have pros/cons.  If you stay on property you don?t have to rent a car since Disney has its own bus system from the airport to the resorts. And there are often discount packages (especially with this economy.) You can stay off property at a hotel and get great deals online (seen some $50 rates for good hotels!) since there are so many hotels in Orlando ? but you?d have to rent a car (some hotels say they have shuttles but most are sporadic and unreliable (but car rentals are DIRT cheap in Orlando ? last time we went I got an SUV for about $100/week.) The other option is to rent a condo off site. This is what we did the last time we went. We rented at a place called Windsor Hills (www.windsorhillsrents.com) all the condos are privately owned and you rent directly from the owner. We got a 3 br/3 ba condo for about $110/night. It was awesome to have so much room and a kitchen to store snacks/quick breakfast foods ? and it was very clean/safe. They even have townhouses/SFH homes with private pools.  This is a great option for people with kids/traveling with friends ? but if it was just DP and I, we?d probably stay in a hotel room on property.

The other option would be to stay at one of the Universal Hotels. As a resort guest, you get a ?front of the line pass? to all of the attractions at Universal.  This is huge. I haven?t been to Universal in years (15+) and haven?t been to Islands of Adventure ? but due to HP opening and all of the hype, it is projected that Universal/IOA are going to be jammed for the next year or so.  The ?front of the line pass? would be great.

As far as travel agents, I would recommend Dreams Unlimited Travel.  They will help find a package (on site or at a few off site hotels that they partner with) and also keep up to date if any discounts come up and apply them to your reservation.

The boards that I recommend for Disney planning are www.disboards.com. Great information and very nice people.

A good tool for planning is www.touringplans.com. For a subscription, you can look and see what they forecast the crowds to be on any given day. And they are amazingly accurate.

Ok..that is a start. I could go on and on. Food, rides, etc. Let me know if you have other questions!

  • This is fabulous information! Thanks so much. I can't wait to check out the boards you mentioned. We are staying at Port Orleans-Riverside.

I would love any suggestions of rides...since I'm betting there've been lots of additions since I was a kid.

  • Thanks so much for all the info! I'll share it with C when we talk over our 2010/2011 travel plans (around ttc and home renovations!).
