Best E-reader?

I've resisted for a long time, but we're planning a longer family trip this summer so I think I'm ready to take the plunge to avoid packing a million books.

I am looking at some of the sony readers, and the kindle, and possibly the nook.  Does anyone have any firsthand experience or reviews with these?  Until now I've been a diehard paper book reader, but I can't deny how attractive it is to carry over 1000 books in one little compact package.  ;)

Re: Best E-reader?

  • I've got the Kindle (the smaller one) and I love it.  It's so easy to just slip in my bag and take on the go.

I got a leather case for it that came with a light, so reading in less than optimal light levels is not a problem.  Plus, with the case it has a bit more a of bookish feel.

  • I bought the nook for my DH . . . he loves it! (he got it for Christmas) He looked and researched a lot -- he never thought he would really like an e-reader b/c he is a die heard paper fan.

That being said, he travels a ton for work and carrying three or four books for a two day business trip was just not working for him.

The nook is by far his favorite. His office manager got a Kindle a few days before DH got his nook . . . they brought them in and compared them. Everybody in the office liked the nook better. Even his office manager wished he would have bought the nook. (he didn't return his Kindle b/c he would have to wait over a month or so to get on the wait list for a nook)

    I would get a nook.

  •  This is an awesome matrix of different ereaders.  Also check out the mobileread forums for information overload :)

I have a Sony Touch ereader, and I am perfectly happy with it.  More so after I did a little research into converting different formats into compatible formats (I had a free ebook from Barnes and Noble that I had to convert in order to read it on the Sony).  If you get the Sony, definitely look into Calibre, which is an alternative software for managing your ebooks.

I mainly wanted the Sony because they are a technology company, not a book company, so I feel like I am not being locked into one vendor's selection.  Plus, they support more formats.  It is, however, a bummer to not have access to many books on Amazon and Barnes and Noble because *they* have locked their books to their readers (conversion can be pain).  I am able to read ebooks from my library, and there are many out-of-copyright, free ebooks out there that work too.

  • I have the Kindle also and LOVE it - very light-weight and fun to read on. I have a zippered padded case that I use all the time b/c I'm a klutz and would drop it all the time.  It is small enough to fit in my purse and easy enough to read a few pages waiting for a doctor appt, etc.  Very cool. Haven't seen any other reader, but it's definitely the wave of the future.
  • I have a Kindle and an iPod Touch, and I honestly prefer the iPod Touch most of the time.  I'm generally not ever sitting down to read a ton in one sitting, so I like that it is faster and fits in my pocket.

Granted, I'm mostly using both of them for travel guides, which lend themselves to a very different kind of reading than novels.  DH reads a lot more novels and really likes his Kindle.
