outdoor landscaping question..

I am thinking about doing some landscaping along the sidewalk that leads up to our house. I was thinking about using rock, but just got an idea that I need opinions about. We have a pet chinchilla that uses wood chip bedding. Could that be used in place of mulch? Or would the chinchilla doo doo be bad for plants? Just thought if it would work it would be nice to reuse it!

Re: outdoor landscaping question..

  • well.... It would probably be nice but i would have to guess that the smell would be horrible if you reused it... even if you were to clean it the smell when the sun beats on it would be bad... If you like it I would buy fresh and put it down...

  • Way to think resourcefully!  I don't think it would be a good idea to reuse the woodchip bedding...here's why...  I work on my landlord's horse stalls often and we use wood shaving bedding.  The area where we toss it in the woods after we muck the stalls attracts all kinds of animals!  Plus, it gets nasty in the rain.  It can hold mold spores as well if it stays damp with you-know-what.  Throw that stuff away and get some mulch, pebbles/decoreative gravel or slate.  If you're going for cheap, look at a local Habitat Restore or something of that sort.  Sometimes you can get lucky and find things like donated slate that you can break and arrange pretty with a sand filler that you do yourself!
