Lilac blooming question

I planted 2 lilac bushes, drawf I think, 2 summers ago.  They didn't bloom last year, this year they have their leaves already and I am not seeing any bloom buds.  I am in zone 6a, should they be blooming soon?  How many years do they need to be planted before I get flowers?  Thanks!

Re: Lilac blooming question

  • Mine bloom mid May in zone 7.

Are yours planted in full sun?

  • I think it can take lilac up to 4 years to bloom.
  • Mine bloomed the first year. I'm in zone 5a. It may be early yet. I'm not sure I even have leaf buds at this point.

  • I'm in 6A/6B... my lilacs currently have leaves and I just noticed bloom buds over the weekend.

I planted mine in '06.. they were about 18 in. tall and had blooms on them when I purchased them.

'07 they did not bloom, '08 they bloomed (just a few sparse flowers) in September (weird??), then finally last year they bloomed in spring.

Good luck!  I don't think they're a lost cause or anything!  I bet they'll bloom next year for sure.

  • Lilac's are one of those bushes that take a long time to propogate and establish themselves. You have to be patient.  It depends on the variety but it could a couple more years.
