Hello eveyone. I am new to this board. DH and I are looking at houses and had a question about Homeowners Insurance. Most major companies are not writing new policies in Florida. I know of Citizes and how they have had a bad rep when it comes to claims. Can any of you recommend another insurance company that will write new policies?
TIA!
Re: Homeowners Insurance
We had the same issue last summer when we bought our home. We are insured with Avatar. Here's a link:

We have State Farm, and they are cancelling us this summer... no longer insuring in FL. Need to find new ins company, but rather not have Citizens.

I don't know if this will help or not, but we actually contacted this insurance company and they got us insurance (We have Avatar). The company is located in the Tampa Bay area but they were able to get us insured for our home in Wellington. My SIL who lives in the Tampa Bay area uses them for her home owners insurance and recommeneded them to us.

I will never understand how insurance is required if you have a mortgage, but insurance comapanies can flat out deny you coverage based on your location.
I don't know if you have checked out this site, but it has the contact information of all the home owner insurances for the state of Florida (this is a government site):

It tells you all the rates. I would call the companies up and see if they're writing for your area.
Do you have windstorm mitigation? If so, let them know. It's cuts your premium in half in most cases.
From that site, I pulled up the rates for Dade county. This is not to say that they are all writing at this moment. Some have time frames (certain months out of the year) where they do not write polices. It's usually around hurricane season.
I'll have to check out the other ones you guys mentioned.
Thanks everyone!!
We have citizens through Statefarm and they have been great. We had a claim about a year ago and they did not give us any problems, everything went very smoothly.

Oh cool! I have heard bad thing but then again most of that was from the year we had back to back hurricanes so maybe they have gotten better.
Anyone else have experience putting a claim through with them?
