Anyone ever have their cholesterol levels checked?

And not gotten a good result? I had it done recently and the results weren't good. :(

I'm really upset and scared about it, especially since my dad had quintuple heart bypass surgery a few years ago (though no one else in my family has ever had heart problems). I've started exercising more and being more careful about what I eat, but I haven't ever been an unhealthy eater in the past. I guess this post is more of a vent since it's been bothering me for a week now. No more Pizza for me Wilted Flower

Re: Anyone ever have their cholesterol levels checked?

  • One of my best friends had hers checked and it was high!  She runs 3+ miles a day and eats all organic and super-healthy.  Sometimes it's just heredity.

  • i had mine checked in july and they were fine, but the nurse explained to me that blood cholesterol levels are linked to food cholesterol but not totally related.  how your body processes the food and heredity play into it as well.

GL w/ keeping it under control!

  • Ditto everam on heredity, I had high cholesterol when I was 5ish. Seriously, 5!  Though my mom treated us occasionally, it wasn't like I was having McD's and hohos all the time. My mom changed some of our family's diet got it back to within a normal range. I don't think she really did anything big, egg beaters instead of eggs, ground turkey instead of beef, margarine instead of butter. But I won't be surprised when one day heredity comes back a'knocking, my dad's been on cholesterol meds for as long as I can remember.
  • Ok, I'm glad I'm not a weirdo, because mine was high when I was 5 too Terp!  I cut back on things like cheese and eggs, and eventually it got better.  I had it checked back in the fall and it was still normal.

Good luck!  It could be just hereditary.  I know my MIL eats really well & exercises, but hers is still pretty high and her docs have just told her that it runs in her family.

  • Maybe we're both weirdos ;)
  • Hmmmm, that's a possibility!
  • was just your LDL high? ?How were your HDL levels? (the higher the better...HDL is your "good cholesterol") ?and yes it is mostly genetic...

  • Sorry you did not get good results. Mine has been slightly high in the past. Are you taking any medications? Sometimes high triglycerides can be a side effect of birth control pills.
