Online Dating

Have you ever tried online dating (e.g., match.com, eHarmony, Jdate, etc.)?

Or, if online dating became popular after you were already seriously dating and/or married, would you try online dating today if you were/are single?

FWIW, I voted, "Yes, absolutely. Sounds great."

I tried it a little back before it was popular & only full of nerds in 2000-2001. I didn't meet my H that way, but I met some nice guys & I'm still friends with some of them.

I just remembered that I met guys online earlier than that. When I was in HS, I met 3 guys in 1997 on AOL when I was 16. Not exactly personals, but WTF was my mom thinking, letting me meet these guys? Unsupervised, even. One drove to my house from 70 miles away. He ended up being really nice, and I went to his prom with him.

One was creepy & wore his McDonald's uniform on the date.

This is so awesome.  I have a friend who met her husband this way.  It is sort of a secret.  Tee hee hee.  I love it.

LOL. One of my friends met up with guys she had met on AOL in high school. Freaks me out to think about...a little too much "To Catch a Predator" for my tastes!

  • I went on a date in high school with a guy from Cal (I lied about my age since he said he looked like Brenden Fraser from Encino Man) that I met on a phone dating service.

I've dated people I met online during college and law school when H and I were on breaks from each other.

If I were ever single again, I would definitely online date.  That would be after I had insom hook me up with mr. insom's friends.

I can't do emoticons at work but at least 3 of them apply here.

Aww the good ol' days of AOL.

I never actually met any guys, but I did talk to 1 or 2 on the phone.

Chat rooms were all the rage.

  • Yes Met da hubz this way. Working out so far.
  • I met someone online once. It wasn't meant to be, but it was fun while it lasted.

I know quite a few married people that have met their spouses online.

Yes! I definitely remember significantly older dudes trying to get me to meet them. I thought it was funny, but in that Winger "She's only 17" kinda way, not in a "He's going to jail" way.

What? You wouldn't want to date my brother?

  • And to answer the question, I wouldn't try online dating at this point in my life.

If I were 40, unmarried and scared I would become a crazy, single, cat lady, then I would go for it.

  • I went out on a couple dates with guys I had met on Craigslist back in '01. If I were in a position to date again I wouldn't rule out online dating, but probably wouldn't use CL again.

We went to see Howard Stern's Private Parts. He didn't say a single word to me the whole time we were in line to buy tix or waiting for the movie to start (just grunted a little when I'd ask him questions). Awkward, considering how sexual that movie was. Afterward, he asked me if I wanted to do it again sometime (first words he spoke all night).

I went home & changed my screen name.

Casual Encounters used to be one of my favorite timewasters when I was at a place that didn't block it.

    This is the best.

  • I'm now single and it's still only a maybe. I know a lot of people and there seems to be more risk with on-line dating rather than getting to know someone or have them recommended through friends.

I met guys in 1994 from the IRC.  They were also creepy, but I was at least over 16.

Pretty much only toothless people in rocking chairs even remember the IRC these days.  I am both dumb and ancient.

  • I had soooo much fun with online dating! It's like reaching into a big bag of jelly beans. You never know what you're gonna get. Some might be black licorice (yuck) but then you get that yummy cherry one and it makes it all worth it.

Before I met dh, I briefly dated a fireman, a school teacher, and some unemployed pot grower/smoker. ;)

Then I saw dh's picture and he was standing in front of Neuschwanstein (sp) Castle in Germany and I knew he must be in the military. Since I am former military and my ex-h was military, I have a thing for military guys. So I snagged him.

He even tried to break up with me after dating for three weeks, but I wouldn't let him. Haha. Now, we're happily married. It worked out well for me.

    I have no words.

I have not done any online dating.

A friend of mine dated the son of a famous R&B singer, who she met in the dating service that is used by the Onion and salon.com.   I always thought it was hilarious that this product of music royalty was trolling the online dating world.  I was disappointed when they broke up because that wedding would have been awesome.

    Yes

I had a chat room boyfriend from Guam.  GUAM!   I remember about a year after we had our midnight phone chats I found out that he got his IRL gf pregnant.  I would pay to have our emails back. :)

I recently did some match.com searching for H's bff (before we set him up with my little sis who FB now claims he is "in a relationship with") I was very impressed with who was out there in my area (at least girl-wise).

  • I met my husband online 5 years ago. My sister just married a guy she met online 2 years ago.

I have an ex that used to brag about being a "conductor" on IRC. We didn't meet that way but I think he met others that way. This was in the later 90s though so maybe he was a real loser.

Anyway I would definitely try it. I think online dating levels the playing field a bit for introverts. Especially now that you can facebook friend them and google them prior to a date it seems like a better bet than meeting at a bar.

  • A lot of the kids from my High School frequented the Orange County AOL chat room.  I even talked to MH on there before we met and found out we had mutual friends.  I actually met a lot of awesome people because of that chat room.

I'm not as adventurous as I once was.

Heck no.  I'd have a complex that he'd dump me sooner or later bc he's big-time.  I like the quiet nerdy types that don't get out much so they don't know they can do better.

    =/

I've got at least two guys fer you.  They're D&D free.   My take is 20% though.   :)

  • I considered it before I met MH.  It seemed like a potentially good way to pre-screen and be pre-screened prior to actually meeting up with someone.  Being a single mom it was always awkward slipping that whole "Oh, and by the way, I have a kid," line into the conversation when I met guys IRL.
  • I met my husband on there 3 years ago so a definite yes from me.  I dated a few different guys that way.  It was a great way to meet people when I moved to new cities. :)

Can you imagine using CL now?  I would think that a lot has changed on that site.
