Where to go to identify a mystery plant?

It is our first spring in our new house and I have lots of stuff coming up in the backyard (where the deer can't get to them) and while I can identify many of the plant (iris, day lily, peony, lilac to name a few) I am starting to worry because I have one plant that I think could be a weed and it is coming up in several locations around the yard. 

No pic but the plant has dark green leaves with purple hues on the edges radiating out from a central point.  It is a low growing plant, no stalk of any kind.

Is there a website that you can put in identifiers of the plant and it will give you possible plants it might be?  Or does anyone have any ideas?

There could be dozens of plants with that description. A pic would help greatly.

You can always contact your local ag extension agency or master gardeners group - they often do free identification.  Or take a stem into a local nursery.
