I'm assuming Home Depot is probably not the most eco friendly place to buy my seeds! Does anyone have a good source for seeds? Pref. organic, and local would be amazing - I'm in the midwest.
Re: Best place to buy seeds?
Home Depot does sell organic seeds. It's a Martha Stewart brand, I believe.
I like to buy mine from a local company my mom found. Local to me isn't local to you, of course.
Different seeds cost different amounts. I generally just buy what I want and don't really shop around for price much. If you want to know what things cost, look around online at a couple of catalogues:
I think these ones are near you:

A package of seeds is usually $1-3. How many are in the package can also vary a lot.
ETA: This is where I like to buy: http://www.prseeds.ca/ . Mostly because if he can grow it here, I stand a chance. My season is pretty short.
I like to buy seeds from here:

(Admittedly, it's not local to you -- or me! But great quality and business practices....)
We ordered from Seed Savers Exchange this year. http://www.seedsavers.org/

I just stumbled across this website last night. Glad to hear their quality is good!
I have found that their quality is okay. Plus they also stock some seed varities from Seminis, the seed branch of Monsanto. Monsanto eating up smaller seed companies has turned them into the biggest seed company in the world, which concerns me greatly. So I don't buy seeds from Johnny's.
We got our seeds from www.highmowingseeds.com, a small organic cooperative in Vermont. I have a friend who grew up there, she says they're an awesome company and great to work for. The only plants of theirs that have sprouted yet are tomatoes and peppers, but they're doing well.
Correct. You have no way of knowing how old those seeds are, or how Home Depot has been storing them. They may not be viable. The last thing you want is a low germination rate because the seeds are old or were too cold/hot during storage! The packets I got from High Mowing Seeds are labeled as being for the 2010 growing season and the date they were packaged.
Ooof, didn't know! Thanks for the tip....
ooooh, the highmowing place has purple potatoes! I might have to try them.
Ohh, that's neat! I may have to try those too!
