Deeply Saddened and Utterly Outraged!!!

I saw this article today on Yahoo and I just don't know whether to cry or scream...or maybe BOTH.

 This church in Kansas sends protestors to Military funerals for this purpose:

The Westboro group has been protesting at military members? funerals for years. The church leader, Fred Phelps, preaches that American deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishment for the nation?s tolerance of homosexuality. (He was among those banned from Britain last year for fostering hatred or extremism.) The protests have nothing to do with the fallen service members' sexual orientation, and the church says its protests are held within a ?lawful distance? of the funerals.

And then these awful people go on to post this on their website:

?Military funerals have become pagan orgies of idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the dunghill gods of Sodom and play taps to a fallen fool,? states a press release posted on the church?s website, announcing the rally at a memorial service for Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson. At the bottom of the press release are printed the words ?Thank God for IEDs,? referring to the roadside bombs that have killed thousands of troops in both wars.

I cannot believe that as far as we have come there are still so many people that still cannot allow others to live peacefully in whatever relationship or with what sexual orientation they are. I am just sick after reading this and I feel like there may never be any true peace for us.

Those people are Grade A nutjobs.  Sadly, this is not at all new news.  Phelps and his "church" have been pulling stunts like this for years.  They got their 15 mins of fame for demonstrating at Matthew Shepard's funeral, and since then have continued to get more and more outrageous.

I guess I have been blissfully unaware of these crazies. I kinda wish I still was. It made me sick to my stomach that they would be so cruel, especially at some family's funeral of their loved one. And then to try to tie the death of that hero to their beliefs about homosexuality. It's like connecting doggie treats to clothes hangers. It just doesn't make any sense to me. Poor deluded people. I pity them.

BTW, I'm from Kansas and would just like to say that I have never met a single Kansan who thinks they are anything but totally nuts and an embarrassment to the whole state. Not even the most religious and socially conservative people.

It's a very small church, basically consisting of a single family. They get tons of attention for their antics, but it's definitely not a growing movement or anything. THANK GOODNESS.

Um yea. Here in Iowa we have a scholarship called the matthew.shepard.scholarship. It's awarded to GLBT&A Students have done outstanding service in the GLBTA community. It offers students a 4/yr scholarship to one of Iowas top 3 university. A good friend of mine one this when I was a sophomore, they came and protested her graduation. It was huge drama, and really sad.
