Dd asked me this morning if we could color some eggs for Easter. I haven't given her an answer yet. Obviously you need white eggs to do this, and all our farm eggs around here are brown. So I would need to buy CAFO eggs which I don't really want to do.
Ugh....I can just imagine having this convo with dh or ...well pretty much anyone.
What do you think? Once a year, so not a big deal....? Or stick to my principles and try to explain it to dd...?

Re: dying Easter eggs..
Could you do some other type of 'dyeing' of eggs?
I didn't realize eggs had to be white, but what about blowing eggs? i have some really pretty ones like that... According to Martha Stewart, you can still dye Brown Eggs but they just give a more muted color... I don't know your Dd, but I have nannied for enough kids that it may be possible if you don't make a big deal of it, and just get the brown eggs that you normally use and color them... that it would be good enough!
Good luck!
I was thinking the same... some of the brown ones are lighter than others, too. I would just use those!
Speaking of dying eggs... just saw this:

We've dyed brown eggs, and it works. Not exactly the colours you'd expect, but still nice looking. You can also use natural dyes. Reddish kale makes the water bule-purple... i wonder if it would do the same for eggs? Beets would be another good one. This link tells how to cold-dye eggs, so you don't even have to boil them. http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=546576ecfd22f010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&lnc=ad27a68fc92fe010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&rsc=taxonomylist
I've heard that you can use vinegar to remove the brown outer layer of the eggs (i think used in hungarian/ukrainian eggs). I wonder if using vinegar instead of water would work? Otherwise you could soak in vinegar for a bit, then dye as desired.
