Cost of Cutting Down a Tree

The neighborhood I live in has a LOT of trees that were planted when the neighborhood was new (in the 60's) now they are HUGE!  When we moved in it was so nice having the huge tree in front of our house but the grass has trouble growing in front of our house and there is occasionally a little water in our basement (which neighbors who have had this problem say means the roots are interfering with our pipes and it's going to cost us about $2,000 to fix the problem which isn't too bad now but will need to be fixed in the next couple years.

So anyone have a tree this big removed?  How much was it?  I would like it all gone and to plant another tree in its place.  Any recommendations on what would be a good tree to have that we wouldn't need to worry about becoming that gigantic?

Re: Cost of Cutting Down a Tree

  • We've had two trees cut down... a large blue spruce infront of the house and something else (deciduous) in the back yard.  I can't really give you an accurate idea of the cost because we had a tree cutting friend.  I think we paid $500 for both of them... but that is less that I would have had to pay if we hired someone.

About planting something in its place... I would just give you the heads up that the ground may not be ready for something like that.  Due to the acidity in the front from the spruce we had to use limestone to treat when we covered it with sod.  In the back, there are a large number of roots still underground rotting away, so we left if for a couple years, then tried planting a smaller tree with a shallow root system.  My green hornet japanese maple has been around for 2 years now (knock on wood).

Oh, and for replacement trees... just read the tag on the trees at the garden centre.  I love Japanese Maples, but be mindful there are some that get quite tall.

  • The answer to this really varies depending on your location and the size of the tree.  We have a couple of massive poplar trees towards the back of our yard.  We were quoted $5,000 to take one of them down.  We've had others taken down several others costing between $300-1500.

There are so many other things you could plant.  I'd just go to the nursery and find something that has a mature height that's more along the lines of what you're looking for.
