Need some trip planning help!

I am thinking of spending the night in Santa Monica with DD. Is she old enough to ride the rides at the pier? I haven't been there in years and have no clue what is still there. Also, any hotel recommendations? I want something by the ocean, maybe Loews?

My other idea was to stay a night in Newport and play around on Balboa Island, but not sure how much there is for her there-again, haven't been in years! Any help or different ideas would be great! TIA!

  • The pier has kiddie rides that you can take your daughter on. She's probably too small for the coaster and the ferris wheel. I've never stayed in Santa Monica but I'm sure someone else will have suggestions.

I don't know about Newport so I'm no help there.

  • I actually just took a day trip to Santa Monica last month with 2 friends and their 4 kids. The rides are based on height not age. I forget the measurement requirement, but the rides at the pier that I saw would be too big for your daughter. My 2 1/2 year old son could barely go on the one ride he went on - he just made the height requirement and he is 34 inches tall. All the other rides were 36 inches minimum I think.....

They have lots of video games, skiball and a few of those rides that you put quarters in for the little ones. Other than that, she will probably just love to run around. You know, a couple buckets, shovels and some sand and they are good to go :)

As far as hotels, if you have no budget, I totally recommend Shutters on the Beach.....totally cute hotel with great service, right on the beach, a decent walk to the pier and the best cookies and milk room service item there is :) However, the hotel is not inexpensive by any means.
