Starting a veggie garden....

Hello everyone!!

We have a fenced in backyard that is over an acre. I really want to start a vegetable garden, but I have no idea where to start first. If you have a garden, how did you start it? Do you have any good book recommendations?

Any help you can offer would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

Re: Starting a veggie garden....

  • We are just starting out as well. There are already a few helpful posts on here. A book that is recommended a lot is the book "All new square foot gardening". We are only in the process of implementing it right now. We're going to start small with one 4x4 box. DH bought 8-foot 2x12s and built a frame. We'll remove some grass in our backyard, set the frame on it, put down garden cloth and then buy a special soil mix that will fill to about 8 inches. Then we'll divide the square up into 16 squares per the book and decide what to plant where. HTH!
  • I'm also a first time veggie gardener and really like the book 'Square Foot Gardening' as well. It makes the whole process seem manageable and not too overwhelming :) Our new house has two 3 ft x 15 ft raised beds, so I am planting in those and hoping for the best!
