OK, so admittedly, I don't dress up very often. Today I wore a dress to work and one of my coworkers posted something about it on FB - a kind post that I looked nice.
So one of assistant deans just came into my office with a camera (she's known for taking pictures all the time), looked at me disappointed and said - "by the way X was going on about it, I thought you were dressed up as a bunny or a chicken or something!" We chatted for a minute, she did say I looked nice and then left. It was a pleasant conversation and I truly like this person (and essentially everyone I work with).
However - after she left my office I started to think -
Cripes - WTF impression have I given my fellow staff members for them to think that I would ever consider coming to work dressed like a bunny or a chicken? And furthermore, what kind of a person WOULD come to work dressed like that? I work in an office setting! I don't know whether to scratch my head, laugh or cringe!
Re: Funny? Work story
I think you have to laugh. As Jane Austen famously put it, "What do we live for but to be sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?" I'm sure it was like a game of telephone, where Sue says "Hey, did you see Lady all dressed up today?", and Joe tells Bob "Lady's dressed up today!".
By the time the fifth person has heard it, you are not only dressed up, but as a chicken. And are laying eggs on your desk. And are hatching chocolate bunnies. ;-)
