50th Birthday Party

My mom's turning 50 and I want to give her a fun time, but I need some ideas to make it unique. Any suggestions?

Re: 50th Birthday Party

  • My parents both turned 50 this past year, within a month of eachother. I threw them a joint surprise birthday party and invited all of my extended family and some family friends. We disguised it as a "house warming" party for my husband and I since we bought our first house last year. It worked out perfectly and everybody had a great time! Foodwise we went really simple- cheese, crackers, summer sausage, cream cheese sausage dip, and fruit. We did oreo balls and mini cheesecakes for sweets. And of course beer and martinis! Good luck!!

  • I have the same thing going on!  Can't wait to see what kind of ideas people offer... we're doing a joint birthday party for my parents this summer and really want to do a fun theme not the standard "over the hill" stuff!

  • Turn back the clock to the 1960s? Or a party with gold accents for a 50th Jubilee, so you could use gold as a theme.
  • I agree with PP about making it a blast from the past or a trip down memory lane.  Perhaps you could look up what songs were popular when she was in high school and make a playlist.  Then have photos of her all around the party.  You could scan them and print them in black and white to add to the vintage feel.  You could have people write their favorite memories of your mom on note cards and put them in a nice box or album for them as a keepsake.

If you're looking for something totally different, how about having cocktails and apps in a nice loungue somewhere.  Have the event feel a little more luxe!

Where does she like to go?  Mountains?  Beach?  How about doing a fun and casual beach theme?  Think fruity drinks and Beach Boys music playing.

    HTH!  GL!

  • I agree with the 60s theme.  My cousin did this for my uncle's 60th/retirement party and we had a blast.  Everyone dressed up, there were boone's farm bottles on every table, oregano & some kind of weird paper to look like joints (lol this was hysterical), they had a DJ who played a lot of motown and that.  Have fun planning!
