How to remove mold in the shower without bleach?

We get this nasty moldy-type buildup in our shower and DH usually uses bleach to get rid of it.  I don't want him using bleach anymore, though.  Any suggestions?

  • Here are a couple:

    Tea Tree Treasure
Nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as this spray. I?ve used it successfully on a moldy ceiling from a leaking roof, on a musty bureau, a musty rug, and a moldy shower curtain. Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little goes a very long way. Note that the smell of tea tree oil is very strong, but it will dissipate in a few days.

    2 teaspoons tea tree oil
    2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes two cups.

    Vinegar Spray
Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold. Pour some white distilled vinegar straight into a spray bottle, spray on the moldy area, and let set without rinsing if you can put up with the smell. It will dissipate in a few hours.

  • I have had good luck w/ oxygen bleach, hot water and vinegar...

  • Our bathroom cleaning adventures and cleaning recipes are here (scroll down to below the spray bottle pic)--it is vinegar, borax, castille soap, water, and TTO. Do note that if the grout is stained from mold you will need to replace it to get rid of the mold color. Even if you kill the mold, staining may be left behind.

  • I would also make sure you have a good ventilation system in your bathroom to prevent mold from growing.
  • I've used the Shark handheld steam cleaner and that worked pretty well. Then I used some baking soda afterwards to scrub the area and sprayed with straight vinegar
