Hi everyone, I am from Daytona, FL but my husband and I are thinking of moving to Alabama to be closer to my family in Gadsden. I just graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Ed. and I am looking for a teaching job. How are the jobs in education up there? We are struggling here in Florida and I haven't been able to find anything in over a year.
Also, DH is thinking of going back to school as a computer major. Any good schools that you know of, close to good school districts that I might be able to get a job in?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Hows employment in AL?
I can't help you with the question about Education jobs but I do know a few friends who majored in Elem. Ed. and got jobs right out of school.
What kind of computer major?
Auburn is a fantastic school for Engineering..and really anything computer related. I don't know much about it but I would assume that UAH is a good option too because I have a friend that got his bachelor's at AU and is working and going to UAH for his Master's in an engineering related field.
Sorry I'm not much help

He's thinking about doing an MIS degree, there's on at the University of Alabama but not at the Huntsville campus. I don't really think I want to live in Tuscaloosa, however I have never been there. I just imagine it to be like a college town...
I looked on the University of Auburn website and the tuition seems to be REALLY high, is this because it is a private university? We have to take that into consideration, because he might also have to pay out-of-state tuition

I'm an Auburn girl but I say this with that stuff aside..I wouldn't want to live in Tuscaloosa either...it just seems dirty to me. I think that's why I enjoyed living in Auburn so much because it was clean and everything you need is a 15 minute drive no matter where you live in Auburn.
I can't say much about Tuscaloosa because I've only been there a few times but I lived in AU for 4 years (just recently moved back to B'ham for H's job) and although it is a college town, it isn't bad. There are lots of things to do within the community and there's a state park and lot of parks and stuff.
My favorite thing about AU is gameday when the town turns orange..there is nothing like it.
My H got an MIS degree from AU so if there are any specific questions yours may have about the program just let me know and I can ask my H about it.

The University of Alabama Huntsville does have a MIS program, a good friend of mine just graduated from there with a degree in MIS. Also, the school districts around the area are really good. Madison City school are great school and I don't think you will have a hard time finding an elementary teaching job. I know they are opening a new elementary school next school year. Also the area will be great for your DH because Huntsville has a lot of job opportunites for computer degrees. HTH
Thanks for that info, I went on the Huntsville UA website but I couldn't really find any info on the MIS program, so I figured it was only offered at the UA main campus. I will definitely look into the school system there. I might have a good chance if you say a new school is opening! Now, I am getting excited!
I cant go to University of Auburn, my whole family will disown me lol Although I could careless about football, I hear it's a huge huge deal in Alabama!!

Here's a link to the MIS program at UAH!

I'll second UAH and the Madison City and County both are excellent school districts and pretty easy to get a job in...I was a 4th grade teacher in the Madison City school district for 4 years before becoming a stay at home mom this school year. They hire lots each year.
Also just a note about Auburn University...it is a state university, not private, so the tuition shouldn't be any higher than the University of Alabama.
The difference in the cost of tuition at Auburn University and UA really isn't all that different. On the AU website, the total cost of tuition includes things like room and board/books/personal/transportation/ect., that probably wouldn't really be an expense an non-traditional student would have to pay (except for books, of course). So that may be why it seemed so much higer to you. I'm not sure how UA's tuition is broken down on their website but I work in Admissions at Auburn and I know the cost isn't really all that different.
And Auburn is a public, state university...not private.
ETA: I forgot to mention, Auburn's computer science program is really very good and the public school system (K-12) in Auburn is one of the best in the state.
