Crawling Plant

I am going to add a trelis to the side of our house and plant some type of creeping plant to crawl up it.  Does anyone have any suggestions on a good crawling plant?  I was thinking that I would like something that flowers during the summer to add a little color to that side of the house...

How much sun will it get? How much space are you hoping it will cover and how quickly? Do you want it to stick to the house or just twist around the trellis?

  • It would get partial sun/shade.  I would just want it to kind of twist around an approximately 6' high x 2' wide trellis... the space that I am planning on putting it is in between 2 window wells on the east side of our home.  I have about 6 feet between the windows in which I would have space for it to grow.  Thanks so much for your help!
  • Dr. Loretta - thanks for the suggestions!  I was thinking some kind of rose plant would be nice.  I will look up clematis too and see if that one might work too.  Thanks!

Climbing hydrangea would work well if you don't mind it clinging to the house after a few years when it gets bigger. Here's a good article about them: http://snipurl.com/v9egb

Some varieties of clematis could work and give you more color than hydrangea. Just make sure you choose one that doesn't need tons of sun, because otherwise it won't flower as much. Here are some good varieties for your conditions: http://store.chalkhillclematis.com/clematisforshade.html

except one of our pugs chewed on one of the clematis bulbs today before we planted it, so we'll see how that turns out, lol!

  • Thanks for all your help ladies!  I am thinking I might go with the climbing hydrangea.  I love hydrangeas and I think it might do best for the area that it would be planted in!

Good luck with your clematis bulb Pugz!  I have 2 small dogs that get into everything too.  =)

Clematis is the only thing mentioned that will stay small enough. Climbing Hydrangea can eventually grow to 40'.
