Tomato help?

I'm starting grape tomatoes for the first time. Currently they're around 2in tall. I would eventually like to put them in pots. Any suggestions or tips? I've never done this before & could use all the help I can get. Thanks!

Re: Tomato help?

  • Since you're planting in a container, you can plant it now.  Just get a 10 gallon or more container and add some seed germinating mix in with the potting soil.  Put some rocks or broken pieces of pots on the bottom so the roots aren't sitting in water to avoid root rot.  I've been using a grow box which is similar to the earthbox but this year, I'm planning to use grow bags.  You can purchase them from Gardener's Supply but the company who makes them, Smart Pots, has their own site and the prices are much cheaper than Gardeners.  Gardenweb has lots of useful tips as a lot of gardeners have used them. To protect your tomato transplants, you can cover it with empty milk containers.  Good luck!

  • Another tip: Put the tomato plant somewhere that'll get 8 hours plus of sun and put the container on a wheel stand so you can move it to areas with more sunlight.  Once you fill a container with soil, it's really hard to move around as it's too heavy.

  • Wow, Scatter. I was just going to say make sure you move it into a bigger pot when you transplant it, but it looks like you were much more of a help! Haha. :]
