Yea for a homemade yogurt success!
Turned out MUCH better the second go around. I did it in the oven instead of the crock pot and it is SO good. I think next time I need to halve the recipe though - I have a lot of yogurt. It's a little thinner than commercial because I didn't add the dry milk powder, but its still delish!
Re: Yea for a homemade yogurt success!
yay!
I wish I could use the oven method, but my oven light doesn't have an on/off switch- it only comes on when the door opens and turns off when it closes. I had to make mine in a thermos and I couldn't make a large enough batch to make it worth the time.
Yay! Hooray for homemade food success!
My DH's homemade yogurt goes soooo quickly, even when he makes a double batch. I'm under strict orders to leave the last 1/5 or so in the jar so he can innoculate the next batch, and that's so hard to do! I eye it every day.
For the crockpot recipe, all you do is put 1/2 gallon of milk in the crock pot and turn it on for 4 hours on low. Unplug the pot, and whisk your starter yogurt (1 container of plain yogurt of your choosing - I used greek) with 2 cups of the warmed milk before mixing it into the larger pot. Replace the lid and cover the pot with a large bath towel for insulation. Let sit for 8-12 hours before refrigerating.
