I was so tired when I got home last night from FIL's party that I went straight to bed. But what a really lovely dinner they had for him.
All the little details were so thoughtful. FIL is a huge model railroader as a hobby. So they had little train sets on each table running around in a circle. Ours had a few small buildings and one had a label that said "St. Joseph Hospital" on it, which made me laugh. They had balloons and had prepared a mini roast complete with slideshow of lots of pictures of FIL over the span of his 30 year career (with St. Joe's from 1979-89 and his current company from 89 to present). I would guess there was something like 50-80 people there. The dinner was lovely, as was the cocktail hour with apps. They did a clambake- full lobsters, clams, chowder, salad, baked potatoes and corn, etc. and a great strawberry shortcake for dessert.
There were lots of laughs. After the meal, FIL's boss, the president of St. Joe's(who, btw, is hysterical and may be the tallest man I've ever known in my life) and one of the Sisters stood up and talked about FIL. We got some good dirt as well as some sincere moments about all that he has done over the course of his career. They also gave him a huge envelope full of cards that the other employees had written to him personally that he can open at a later date.
Both Matt and I were so touched. I know FIL was, too. We had so many people come over and introduce themselves to us (they already knew us from the "art gallery" of framed pictures in FIL's office) and chat with us about Alex, Molly, and what a loss it is for the company that FIL is leaving. Most people chose not to talk about the cancer and just celebrate FIL's career but the people that did choose to touch on his health did so in a very tasteful manner and were sensible enough to move right off the topic if we were near FIL or MIL.
I'm so glad that I was able to attend even after the freaky afternoon I had. DH was saying on the way home that someday he hopes to be that important to a company that they honor him like they honored his dad last night when he retires.
Re: wow- what a touching evening.
