Moms - where did you shop for baby furniture?

I'm going to have to break down and buy furniture for this baby . . . the crib I was going to borrow from my sister is not in good shape (any advice on how to gently tell her I don't want it?) and DH is vehemently against using Craigslist. Where did you look for good selection and quality, price, and availability (I don't want to wait 8 weeks for something to come in).

Is it worth it to get a convertible crib? We would eventually have to buy this kid a regular bed anyway. Then again, it's not certain that this is our last baby and to have to buy *another* crib in 3-4 years would really chap my ass.

Thanks!

Re: Moms - where did you shop for baby furniture?

  • We got a regular crib at BRU (a Jardine one), it was probably the cheapest...I forget the price...like $130 or something like that. I love the look of the convertible crib, but honestly I personally think that the toddler bed is a waste (just MHO). The reason we went with a regular 'ol crib is because if we have any more children we want to be able to use it again and we have my old twin bed in Austin's room, which, when he moves to a bed, we will just buy bed rails to put on it....my brothers and I easily transitioned from a crib to regular bed as did my 2 nephews, so I'm sure there is no need for a toddler bed....anyways, enough of my rambling....
  • Truthfully, Lisa, I wouldn't bother with the toddler bed aspect of it . . . I'd go straight to the full size. Gabby went from crib to twin bed with no issues . . . she has my old canopy bed now :) DH refuses to use his old bed (don't ask), so that's why we'll need to buy this kid a bed when the time comes . . . we have nothing else to hand down - LOL! I guess the theory of the convertible crib is good, but I'm not sure how practical it really is, ya know?
  • Oh I hear ya...

Well, I guess what you'd have to do, since your husband refuses to use his old bed, is price out what it would cost to buy a regular crib and regular bed separately and figure out if it would just cost less that way or to buy the convertible (since you can just skip the toddler bed and mattress when converting the bed) and possibly buy another convertible later, again if you plan on having more children....I really don't know what the cost differential would be....

  • Hi Bex!!  We got our set at BRU.  Some people have reservations about buying there but we haven't really had any problems and her furniture has held up well thus far (although what could she possibly have done to it, she isn't even crawling, hahaha!).  A friend of mine recently went to Baby Furniture Warehouse in MA (although I don't know what kind of experience she's had there) and then of course, there's Tiny Totland in Manch.
  • oh, as for gently telling that you don't want the used crib, I would just say that you decided to buy something new for this baby and leave it at that.
  • We bought Briannas crib from BRU.  It converts to a day bed for a toddle but thats it.  I initially wanted a convertable crib, but its really not that important when you think about it.  The crib we have now is at its lowest height and my opinion is that its too high to take the side rail off for it to be a day bed.  We could always attach a smaller side rail.. but I think if we're at that point we'd just transition her into a regular twin bed.  We also plan to use this same crib for baby #2, whenever that maybe and hopefully at that point Brianna will be in a regular bed.   Some of my friends have bought furniture from Target and say its pretty good quality and price.  GL!!
