Relocating to New Haven area

My husband and I are going to be relocating due to his job - anyone have any suggestions on where to live in the area?  His job is in West Haven.  Also any advice on transportation?  We currently have 2 vehicles - do we want to bring both with us?  Specific information would be wonderful!

Thanks!

Re: Relocating to New Haven area

  • I voted Milford because it's a nice little town and your home will have a better resale value.  Hamden would be a close second (not on the New Haven line).

Welcome and good luck.  I do think you'll need two cars because you need one to get anywhere in Connecticut.

  • I voted for Hamden, it's a nice town.  In this state I think you'd need two cars unless you lived closer to NYC and could take the train or public transport or if you lived in Hartford and didn't need to travel far on a daily basis.

  • If you want room for your money stay out of New Haven.  And Hamden can be a little pricey in relation to space too since both towns have colleges with a lot of students living off campus (Yale, Quinnipiac, Southern CT, and Albertus).  West Haven isn't too bad and if you only wanted to bring one car up it would be a good option since there is a good amount of buses runing between there and the surrounding areas.  Milford is a nice area too, I know several people living there.

I think what you need to consider is how long a commute you want to have to work (the towns may be close by but my drive between work-New Haven and home-Hamden is about 10 minutes in the morning and 25+ in the afternoon... if I leave after 3 it gets worse). And if kids are/or will factor into the picture which towns have the best schools.  If you and your hubby can I'd say take a trip up here and spend a day or two driving around the area and see which towns feel best to you.

  • I voted for Milford.  Our friend just bought a house there and got a steal!  I live in Hamden.  We are actually looking to sell our house and soon as the market gets a little better.  Hamden seems nice on the outside but our taxes are killer and to live in the really nice area, prepare yourself for a large mortgage payment every month.  If you are not familiar with hamden, you may end up in the wrong neighborhood and that could be bad.

It all depends really on your price range though. What are you willing to spend?  Are you renting or buying?  Def have two cars.  I honestly can't speak for public trans here in ct, but i wouldn't recommend it.

I think the deciding factor is if you plan on having children or have them, around here the school system varies from each town.  Depending where you are commuting to and fro for work.

They weren't part of your survey, but i personally suggest North Haven, Northford, Durham, North Branford, or Branford.

Thanks for the additional town suggestions!

We will definitely be renting as his position at this point is only for a year.  We do not have any children but might possibly start TTC in the next few months - but obviously schools really wouldn't be a factor for us.

Thank you everyone for your input - please keep posting as I find it VERY helpful!!!

  • I voted for Hamden, but I also second the North Haven suggestion.  If you want to go much pricier, Orange and Woodbridge are gorgeous (but $$$) and commutable to New Haven.  You will also get amazing value in Wallingford, but now you're talking a 30-40 minute commute (I'm guessing), so it all depends on how long you're willing to drive.  You absolutely will want the 2 cars.

  • Two cars are necessary in Connecticut it really is the only way to get around, public transportation is next to non-existant.

I also want to say to check the valley it's 15/20 minutes depending on what town you're in, the values are great.

    You could check out Derby/Shelton/Ansonia/Seymour.

  • if you're going to rent, hamden has a ton of options, just be careful b/c a lot of them house Quinnipiac students.  certain complexes don't rent to QU students (last i heard Avalon was one of them) so you may want to stick to those...  good luck though!
  • You might want to check up the Shoreline too if you are going to rent. I second needing two cars in CT. However, the commuter trains that run along the shoreline communities from New London through places like Old Saybrook, Clinton, and Madison, and Brandford, all stop at New Haven's Union Station and can make connections to NYC very easily.

I work in New Haven but commute about 30-35 minutes from Killingwoth (near Clinton and Madison). I'd recommend Branford, CT as a town with good rentals. There is a lot to choose from between 1-2 bedrooms, but budget about 900-1100 if you'd want to live there. As for a commute, it would be about 15-20 minutes depending on what time you hit the "Q-bridge." It's a really lovely town with a nice downtown, good shops, restaurants and nice local business. There are also lots of parks and green space for little kids if you are TTC soon. It's a pretty family friendly area, although the public school aren't that great, but there are plenty of options for private both in Branford and the surrounding area, should you need those options.

My husband and I have lived in this area for about a year now and we LOVE it. We're renting now and working on saving so that we can buy a place of our own. Hope this can be helpful

We bought a house almost a year ago in Milford, right on the border of West Haven and Orange.  I love the area.  A lot of nice families and a nice community, plus it is a close drive to a lot of places.  We rented first for 3 years on the other side of Milford, and loved it so much that we decided to settle here!  I highly recommend Milford.

  • I went out to the area last weekend and checked it all out and your guys' advice was great help - we decided to rent a place in Milford.  It was a little pricier than Hamden but the town just won me over - I LOVE it!  It seems like the people are so friendly and it just looks like a fun place to be!  So, we will soon be Milford residents come the end of next month!  Big Smile Thanks everyone!!!
