stargazer lillies 101 ?

I purchased stargazer lillies last week from HD. They weren't the bulbs- they were already grown with the lillies beginning to emerge. I divided the plants (there were 7 stalks) and planted them in my garden. They seem to be doing well- the lillies have come out and I have been staking them in the ground as they tend to tip over.

My question is, given that they weren't bulbs and that they are blooming about 2 months before expected, will they come back next year? What other things should I be looking for/doing to ensure they will thrive?

Thanks!

Re: stargazer lillies 101 ?

  • I grow Asiatic Lilies - Stargazers are Oriental Lilies - and lilies are extremely easy to care for. When they finish blooming, remove the spent blooms and leave the foliage and stalks until they begin to turn brown. The leaves collect the sunlight and feed the bulb for next year's show. I started my lilies the same way. I started with 5 plants 3 years ago and this past fall, I had a clump of about 45 plants.

Lilies tend to multiply by 3 - I found that my larger lilies (3-4ft tall) multiplied by 4-5 bulbs. So, next year, you should have 3 new off-shoots off of each of your plants. As far as care, I really don't do much to my lilies. I sprinkle a bulb feeder (bone meal I think), over the areas in the fall. Watering - usually once a week, maybe twice if I don't get any rain during the week. Lilies don't require a lot of water; so you don't need to water them every day.

Here is a fact sheet that has some more information.
