Newbie- Soyzia grass?

Ok I am new to this board and to grass. We just bought our first home...I have only ever had condo's so no gardening for me.

Can anyone help me with this type of grass. It looked like straw and I gave it a very deep raking. It's starting to turn green now a few weeks later. Do I need to fertilize it?

I've looked into this type of grass for our lawn. Apparently it just stays green for a long time in areas where it gets cold (like NJ). I don't think it needs fertilizing, just time to come back.

You have Zoysia in New Jersey?  That's about the upper limits of its range, if not beyond.  It's normally used in the deep south, Texas and California.  Take good care of it to make sure it's happy up there.

Go to Scotts.com and the link on the right for annual lawn care program.  You can type in your zip and grass type and it'll suggest fertilizers for you.  Following the Scotts program will give you a golf course lawn with minimal effort.

PS - I think pp meant to type that it stays dormant, not green, in cold areas like New Jersey.

Oh, since it stays dormant so long, see if you can overseed with annual rye in the fall.  A little googling says Zoysia is very invasive and chokes everything else out, so that might not be possible, but it'd be worth a try to give you a green lawn for a longer portion of the year.

My parents in North Jersey and have Zoysia.  So do most of their neighbors.  It's just need a good raking at the start of the season and grows in very lush.  It's very low maintenance with regards to feeding and watering.

 At least I already did the raking. It was so thick. I will check out that website, thanks.
