Re: tell me about living in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake
I just moved here almost 2 years ago from Baltimore, but grew up in NJ. I love it here. I also looked at Chesapeake and VB only. I really wanted to live in Chesapeake but realized there was more shopping, etc. in the areas of VB. That being said, living near Greenbrier or Battlefield Blvd. in Chesapeake has lots of shopping.
I live in the Glenwood area of VB and love it. I am within 20 min. of anything I want to go to on a regular basis... multiple beaches, VB Town Center, 4 malls, downtown Norfolk, the airport, etc.
I find the people here are nice, the area is clean, the schools in both of those cities are good, and honestly, most of the people here are from upstate NY, NJ, or MD.
Haha! That's funny, I prefer Chesapeake to Hampton and I've been in the area for about 17 or 18 years now and worked in NN at one point.
HR has a ton of different things to offer in so far as walks of life so you'll pretty much have your pick of what kind of lifestyle you want to live. Suburbia, city, country to plain ol' rural. I'm not really familiar with the school systems in the peninsula, but the best school districts in Chesapeake are: Great Bridge, Hickory, Deep Creek. Grassfield is new so I'm not sure what their current ratings are but considering the location it is probably not bad. Oscar Smith is iffy - seriously it fluxes from year to year. Not terribly sure about Va Bch schools either for that matter (if you can't tell, I live in Chesapeake) but they do have some decent schools. Norfolk and Portsmouth leave much to be desired as far as the school systems go but they do have some higher paced areas of living. Suffolk and surrounding areas tends to be much more rural and has experienced some growth in recent years.
Williamsburg is not what I would consider part of Hampton Roads but it is a gorgeous area filled with history as part of the Tri-Cities; Wmsbg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Hampton also offers a variety of lifestyles as well and has been really developing especially with the opening of the Peninsula Town Center - it is hopefully setting a trend in the area. Oyster Point is also a bustling area in that city. I don't know that I would recommend Newport News as a general rule to live in.
I do not know what the cost of living difference is from where you currently live compared to HR - but it is something you will want to take into consideration when relocating.
HTH!!
I grew up in Virginia Beach. Graduated from Princess Anne High School and my parents and sister still live in VB. I have since moved to Richmond, which is a better fit for me, but I did LOVE the beach while I was there.
Pros:
1. Obviously, the beach (although much better if you know the local spots and stay away from the tourists)
2. There is always something to do there. Pretty much every weekend and every night of the week you can find some kind of festival, concert, event etc...
3. The people are really laid back and friendly overall. I think it comes with living at the beach.
4. Excellent school system. VB Schools are ranked in the top 5 school districts in Virginia
Cons
1. Overpopulated, especially during tourist season
2. Overdeveloped. It has been developed way too much since I have moved away from there, which saddens me. I miss the character of VB.
3. Traffic is pretty bad, but nothing compared to Northern, VA, which is where I lived for 4 years.
4. The area is mostly middle class, which I loved, but if you're looking for higher end shopping or more higher class things to do you'll have to drive to Williamsburg or Richmond.
I would definltely reccomend living there. I just prefer Richmond. I think personality wise I fit in better in Richmond than VB, but I do miss that beautiful ocean on those hot summer months.
