Rain barrel + water toy... a ?

So, we are installing our first rain barrel this spring and DH & I were also thinking of purchasing this http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=535639&parentCategoryId=100180&categoryId=100182&subCategoryId=105179

for our son (not very green, we know) ... do you think we could use the water from the rain barrel to power it vs. using the hose from the faucet?

And, would it be "gross" to have our kid playing in rain water vs. hose water (which I think is disgusting anyway)?

Re: Rain barrel + water toy... a ?

  • Rain water is not potable.  I wouldn't let a kiddo (who gets the water all over themselves and toys and inserts varies body parts and toys in mouth) play in it.  :(

  • I wouldn't recommend it.  The water will probably have lots of bacteria in it when it is time to use it...
  • No, hose bibs dispense up to 25 gallons per minute with a high quality hose.  You won't have nearly enough pressure from a rain barrel.

And while I wouldn't advise drinking the pool water anyway (most hoses are not rated for potable water, and even then, I'd be wary) I agree that bacteria etc. will form in your rain barrel.  You are better off sticking to using it for watering plants.

I know you didn't ask, but after what some of the other ladies on here have taught me about lead in vinyl/ PVC, I would pass on this kiddie pool.
