Small flowering evergreen shrub for part shade??

I have a long strip in my yard about 3 feet wide where I would like to plant 7 of the same type of small shrub. These plants would get between 3-6 hours of sun (depending on placement and time of year) in zone 5. Any suggestions? I would love for them to be evergreen and/or have attractive flowers. I am considering boxwood or euonymus, but I was wondering if there is anything more interesting or more appropriate for this space.

Re: Small flowering evergreen shrub for part shade??

  • Maybe camellias or rhododendron. You could put some knockout roses in front of them (they are not everygreen) or flowers so you have color all summer.

  • Gardenia might work there. I have mine in part shade and it does beautifully!

Thanks for the suggestions. Unless there is a hardier variety I'm not familiar with, I don't think camellias or gardenias would winter well in my area. Rhodos are definitely a possibility, particularly since we're hoping to buy something before this weekend and they are one of the few things already widely available. Any other ideas?

  • Mountain Laurels have the prettiest blooms and are something a little different from the usual azaleas and rhododendrons.  The work in full shade but are supposed to flower better in part shade.

  • Check out PJM Rhododendron for evergreen rhododendron hardy to zone 4.  There are varieties small enough for your space and they have nice fall foliage color to boot.
  • Look into the many kinds of pieris, as well.

That's interesting.  Around here Mountain Laurels have these flowers and are more of tree.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended up buying PJM rhodos. They seemed to encompass everything I was looking for and they were on sale.
