How much does your daycare/sitter cost?

How much a month does your daycare/baby sitter charge? And is it a day care center or a home?

We are just starting to think about a baby in our future... and trying to get a feel for some things. Thanks!

  • Our daycare center is $155 a week. But places like Kindercare run about $1400 a month.

  • We pay $750 a month for an in-home daycare that is licensed to have 14 kids (with 2-3 caregivers). We really love the place and they feed the kids for that money too. But I know centers are usually between $1000-$1500 a month.

If your work has a dependent care FSA you can put up to $5000 pre-tax in that and over the course of the year you can get reimbursed for your daycare expenses until the $5k runs out. That way you pay part of the cost before taxes. This is a larger savings in general than taking the child care tax credit on your taxes. You will also have an extra dependent so you can claim an extra exemption on your w-4.

  • Our current daycare is an in-home, and we pay $25 a day for infant care.  I work 4 days a week, so it's about $400-450 a month.

Daycare centers are WAY more expensive...runs anywhere from $800-$2000 depending on the center...those are the range of prices I got when I called around to a few places.

We use a nanny service for nightime and weekend babysitting, and we pay them $12 an hour.  But I am really happy with them all, so I'm ok paying that much.
