Ground cover suggestions

for an area that gets an decent amount of sun.

I would like something that will take over under my hedge row so I can stop weeding constantly.

I was thinking maybe something like alyssum but does it come back every year?

Re: Ground cover suggestions

  • Have you tried using Preen?  It's a weed preventer that you sprinkle on your beds.  It's a miracle product; I've never dealt with weeds like I have at this house where the neighborhood is filled with large lots of forests and fields.  It prevents everything in my beds except one stubborn kind.
  • What about Phlox.....I think it comes back every year and it is pretty/bunch of colors and low to the ground.

I don't put chemicals in my yard. My kids roll around in my yard.

I have thought about phlox. It just seems to take a while to take over.

  • Alyssum is an annual, so no, it won't come back every year.

We have bugleweed, creeping thyme, creeping phlox and snow-in-summer in our full-sun beds.

  • I'm adding candytuft to my full sun beds. It's evergreen and has white blooms in spring. It doesn't seem to spead fast though. I know that Lowe's has them on sale right now. And added bonus - it does well in zone 7 according to my TN/KY Garden Guide.

Candytuft is what I was thinking of I think... it looks like alyssum.

  • Here's some selections from Bluestone Perennials. I bought the Autumn Beauty from over the fall. My little sprigs held up just fine and a a couple have really taken off. The Autumn Beatuty blooms twice - fall and spring. I bought 4 larger varieties from Lowe's (they were on sale last week for $3 and some chanege). My plan is to move the candytuft I planted in my backyard to my front bed. My plans for a nice backyard bed were dashed by my pug. He peed on everything I planted around my patio. LOL
