which flowers/shrubs? (pip)

This is the front of my house. Ignore everything down the left side as we're going to be laying down paver stones at some point so all of that will be removed. We would like to keep everything that is directly in front of the windows. The two higher bushes are lilacs so those are staying (purple and white) and the two low shrubs are going to be taken out so we'll have to put other plants in. I am in Zone 6. I really like forsythia, hydrangeas, dogwood, euonymus, and I will probably put echinacea and black eyed susans in between.

Can you help me narrow this down of if there are other suggestions? We basically have three areas to fill in between the two lilacs. Thanks so much!

  • Hi!  Pretty house!  It is kind of hard to tell from the pics what is what--is the other taller one on the side of the house?  I think all of your suggestions sound great--except to think of the size of a few of the shrubs.  Depending on what kind of forsythia and hydrangea you choose, they may get too tall for the space and you don't want them to look hacked to death trying to keep them in the space you have given them.  I like coneflower and blackeyed susans...I would also recommend some lower growing perennials--check out hardy geranium (also called cransebill) 'Rozanne'..it has blue flowers for much of the growing season and is low and mounding.  Hostas would look nice too!  Have fun, I love gardening!!
  • Hi! Your input is really valuable. Sorry the picture isn't clear, but yes, the lilac bush is on the side of the house too and one in front. I was thinking about putting in dogwood in those spaces now... thanks for the perennial flower suggestions too!

I would change absolutely everything that can be seen in this photo. Except for the house itself, which is gorgeous.
