Wild Animal Park--help asap!

DH and I are from Los Angeles, and we visit San Diego occasionally.  We have a year pass to both the zoo and the Wild Animal Park, but havent yet been to the park.  Family is here visiting from MN and would like to go to one or the other, and we aren't sure which would be better.  Since they have been to a large zoo before, we figured the park would be more fun and interesting, but i wanted to make sure it's worth the trip down there just for that.  Has anyone been here and what did you think?? Has anyone heard anything about it from others who have gone?  What should we expect there?  TIA!

  • I like the WAP better than the zoo.  It'll be hot, so expect that.  ;)  Make sure you take the safari/tram ride to see the animals from all the different continents.  Have fun!

  • Be prepared for HOT weather.  The park sits in the San Pasqual Valley and its been in the high 80s/low 90s in Escondido proper (at my house) and its about 5 degrees hotter at the park.

The new "ride" at the WAP to see the animals is way shorter than the old monorail and it doesnt cover the entire park.  They cut out all of Asia and most of the outlying animals (goats, prewalskis horses, etc).  Be prepared for a LOT of walking.  They have some great trails and its the only way to really see some of the animals.  You will have to walk quite a ways from the entrance to get to Lion Camp and the tram, so definitely wear comfortable shoes.

I used to LOVE the WAP but since the change, im more of a Zoo girl  :)  Each park has its good things (i love lion camp at the WAP and the pandas at the zoo) so it just depends on what you want to do.  The zoo has way more shade but lots more hills and the WAP is fairly flat (with the exception of the hill to get to the exhibits) but its way hotter than the zoo.

  • I am probably too late - but FOR SURE do WAP. I love it so much more than the zoo, as does my DH.
