I've always been accused of going overboard, so I try to keep that in mind when I criticize others.
I went to our friends first brithday for their son. I went through the food line about 45 min after start of party, and the food was gone. I did get some salad, some pasta salad, and some cheese and crackers. They also had (but ran out of) pulled pork and lunch meat turkey. We found out after they had this conversation
He said "I guess I should have made a second lb of pulled pork"
She said "but we had a lb of turkey too"
There were 40-50 people there. I would have figured 3 oz per person and 8 to 10 lbs of meat there.
The best part was, they had 4 huge bags of rolls from wholesale clubs, like what do you need all that bread for with only 2 lbs of meat.
So, knowing I always go overboard, what are different attitudes about this. Do some people consider having any left overs as wasteful and prefer it all get eaten, or was this just poor planning?
Re: have you ever run out of food
I am like you...I never run out of food at a party. That would be unacceptable to me. Your hosts were delusional... and cheap. You can't feed 40 people like that...ugh.
So, basically the first 10 people ate and the rest hit the drive thru on the way home.
I would be mortified.
I agree. I have never ran out of food. Never even came close.
I've never run out, but I cut people slack when they do. If it's their first party of that size they probably had no clue how much they needed. If you were 45 mins late it's possible people got seconds before you got your first serving.
My husband always gets irritated at me because I have so much food at parties and get togethers. I have nightmares of running out of food. I would much rather deal witht he leftovers than someone not get something to eat at my home or gathering.
At my niece's wedding a few years ago, they ran out of some of the foods at the buffet. I would have died!!!

Never ever in a million years. It will be written on my tombstone "She always made too much food at parties...".
I always like to give leftovers away too - people appreciate it. You can freeze stuff like pulled pork too. Stuff like that won't go to waste.
Good luck at your next party - I hate (though would never admit it) going to parties/events where there is little or no food. Or junky food (like nothing but chips) that I shouldn't be eating. Life is too short for that.
Cheers!
I had a cocktail party last year and people devoured the appetizers (which were all I was serving)--fortunately it didn't happen right away though. But by the end of the night, every appetizer plate looked like it had been licked clean. I was really embarrassed to not have had enough. I think the problem that night was that it was a party for a bunch of (mostly) grad student friends of mine...I think they saw appetizers and thought "dinner!" (I was a student for quite a while, so I feel ok saying that : ) At any rate, I learned my lesson and it won't happen again!
I agree with PP that if your friends haven't done a lot of entertaining, they just weren't experienced enough to know how much food to serve--and it's always more than you think. Although from what you said, it sounds like they didn't really care, or almost that they thought they shouldn't have run out (and almost mad that they did)...in that case...shame on them!
I always make enough food and then keep the hamburgers and hot dogs on call just in case the food runs alittle low... that way you never run out of food and you don't go too over board!!!!
Some replies even though this is a bit late.
I agree, I think they were inexperienced and cheap. I don't think anyone got seconds, although I was 45 minutes late...my friend was there on time, her husband got food while she held their baby, when they switched, they were already out.
To the person that had 10lbs of food, 2 pizzas and meatballs for 25 people...don't be embarrassed about that, sounds like people just ate a lot but it does sound like everyone ate. These people had twice as many people and only 2 lbs of meat. I just can get over it. I mean they had less than an ounce of meat for each person.
The person who said something about the wedding>>>OMG>>> you will never believe it but I did run out of food at my wedding. There were 3 options, filets, chicken chesapeake, and vegetarian. About 22 people who ordered the filets did not get served that, they said they ran out even though I turned in the count weeks before hand. They substitued with prime rib, chicken, and some people never got anything. I got some money back, but talk about embarrassing...even though there was nothing I could do different
I would die if I ran out of food. Like most of the posters here, I am a huge over-buyer when it comes to entertaining. I take a lot of garbage for it from my DH, but people love coming to our parties.
Yikes, poor planning for sure! Same as most of the posters here; I never run out of food and my husband can never believe how much I put out! I also hate it when I go to someones house that have ton of people over and bowl of chips and small plate of cookies. I could never do that, I like to give several options including healthy ones.
At my BIL and SIL's WEDDING... yes WEDDING. Her brother made the food and very poorly planned the food. He made small, very small dors d'oeuvres (no main course or sides - the invite promised lunch) and made ONE per PERSON. So we were given huge plates and told to choose one that we wanted. Not to mention, everyone said that they we're nasty. I got the cold limp asparagus wrapped in undercooked greasy bacon, YUCK! Then to add insult to injury they only had enough punch for half the guests. Luckily we all got some of the dry cake though!
