Kid friendly food ideas?

I'm in the initial planning of my daughter's 1st b-day,(still a long way but I'm a planner). We are having about 40 adults and 20 kids ages from 1-10years old. I had originally planned on having chopped beef sandwiches (we're in Texas), baked beans, potato salad and other appetizers. But now that I think of it, I'm not too sure that kids really like chopped beef sandwiches so I may have to change my menu.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Re: Kid friendly food ideas?

  • My DS's 1st birthday is a week from Saturday.  We are having BBQ chipped ham sandwiches, meatball subs and chicken fingers.  I'm making mac & cheese, linguini salad and a cheese ball.  My mom is making hashbrown casserole, green bean casserole and some other veggie.  I also have family bringing a couple of cold salads, baked pineapple, snacks, baked beans, rigatoni, etc.  It's going to be a party of 70-80 people though.  We added the chicken fingers and the mac & cheese to keep it kid friendly.
  • I think PP has a great idea... just add chicken fingers and mac and cheese for the kids, you'll be all set.  Some of the bigger kids might eat from your original menu.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if yhey would eat it.  My 18 month old would.  You could make a plate of pb&j's though.  If you wanted to be extra cute, cut them into shapes with a cookie cutter.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Chicken nuggets are always a hit! Add in BBQ sauce for dipping and it goes right along w/ your other foods :) Mac and Cheese is always a kid pleaser too :)

  • Yep...chicken fingers/nuggets, mac and cheese, hot dogs, fries, pizza bagels (easier to serve and eat than full slices), PB&J (you could just buy a box of Uncrustables to keep it really easy).
  • You could always add in mac n cheese, fruit, etc.. for the kids.  I usually just have a few things and make some of them kid friendly.  For my son's first I had a luau and had polynesian pork, huli huli chicken, asian cole slaw, fried rice, mac n cheese and hotdogs.  I also always put out a basket of yogurts ( in the squeeze tubes) and little cups of applesauce for the kids.  This always goes over well and they do get something nutritional with all the junk they will probably eat.
  • What about hot dogs wrapped in breadsticks (canned) that way kids can just grab and you don't have to worry about a bun.  Good luck.
