Killing off "tree" stump

We had a basswood tree plant itself alongside our house in a garden bed last year.  Grew like a weed.

I cut the tree itself down a week ago.

Is there any way to remove the little stump that's left, short of digging up that section of the bed?  Or am I sort of screwed?

Re: Killing off "tree" stump

  • There's a product you can get (can't remember the name) where you drill holes in the stump, put the stuff in, and eventually light it so it burns like an ember and gets rid of what's left. Might be worth a shot.

  • My neighbor drilled holes in the stump and poured concentrated Roundup down the holes.  When the stump and roots were dead he picked it out with an ax.
  • I think you're going to have to dig it up unless you want to wait a really long time. We had two large trees that were cut down about 1.5 years ago. DH has been using that stuff that pp suggested - you drill holes and add it - but it hasn't done a lot. We've been burning it when we have time trying to make them smaller but they're still there. I will eventually dig them up.

  • I paid $100 to have someone  grind out a very large stump.
