S/O Your Commute

The previous post had me thinking, how many are you driving a long commute to get to work? Do you car pool? Or do you drive alone? Is  your job worth the commute? Which freeway do you hate?

Re: S/O Your Commute

  • I was driving 40 miles each way to and from Mesa to North Phoenix 5 days a week! It was awful...especially on rainy days when my commute time doubled! That is why I left. After 2 years it just got to be too overwhelming.

  • I drive 30 miles from E Mesa to Awhautukee (sp) and love my job! I take the San Tan freeway so it's not bad at all and very rarely has a lof traffic.

  • I drive 26 miles each way and I don't mind it since I am on the road early where there is hardly any traffic and it's all one free way. I like my job so I don't mind it, where I used to live it was further  but I still drove it. We do have a carpool but I don't use it, I don't want to have someone else driving me because I hate slow drivers.
I hate the freaking I-10 from AZ and on. People can not merge and it sucked getting in and out of Awahtukee from the I-10.

A friend of mine does 40 miles each way, not sure why she does it but she doesn't mind I guess and she gets up early enough too be beat traffic.

  • Luckily, right now, I drive about a mile to work, no highways or anything. It's great!

But once we buy a house, if we get the one in Gilbert, it'll be about a 20 min. commute on the 202 to the 10. I will end up carpooling with DH if we get that house, which will be nice!

So so so jealous that you'll be able to carpool with your DH!  Casey and I tried so hard to do this when we were job searching.

  • I drive about 18 miles each way- and for the most part it's not bad.  I hit times when traffic stinks (like yesterday with the sports events downtown the 202 to 10 interchange sucked, but I took 24th street down to baseline and it was only about 15 min more then taking freeways, plus a pretty view of the mountains.

For me, it's worth it.  While every day isn't puppy dogs and rainbow's, I'm paid very well, have some good flexibility, and love the work I do and what our organization does.  Nothing beats going home and knowing I made a difference in someones life, or meeting people who see me wearing my logo and them telling me how we've changed their life.

  • I commute 26 miles each way, from North Phx to Mesa. The mornings aren't too bad (about a 40-minute drive), unless I hit any kind of accident, of course. The afternoons/evenings are draining though -- usually about an hour because I hit more traffic.

I've been in this job for about 10 months. I used to have a 15-20 minute commute, and I really took for granted how great that was, ha. I wish I could have the short commute back, but this job is a better fit for me in a lot of other ways, so it has been worth it. I do worry that once the baby is born, I'm really going to hate the extra time the driving keeps me from home. But for now, being happy with what I'm doing is outweighing the negatives of the drive.

  • Not sure how many miles Carl drives, I'll have to ask him but his normal commute takes 45-60 minutes which for us is NOTHING. He goes down the 303 to I-10.

When we were in New England, his commute was 90-120 minutes on a good day...  The money made it worth it truthfully. SO that is why this new commute time is awesome for him. And we make better money in a cheaper area so he was fine with it..

He doesnt carpool as he doesnt know anyone who works near him from out here.. Heck, he doesnt even really know anyone period.. haha

  • I drive about 33 miles one way to 1st ave and washington downtown from surprise.  I love my job and the people that i work with now that all drama llamas are gone.  I try taking side streets when ever possible but usually i take the 101 to the 10 and i hate the 10 it is like there are f our people evey day that just simply insist on gouing 45 mph so that the rest of us have to stay behind them... lol on the way home it is not as bad it is juts the mornings.. maybe it is a lack of caffine.  i just put on johnjay and rich or my ipod and i am good to go :)

No carpooling for me because i am the only one in my office that lives in Surprise...

  • My commute is super easy- I take Riggs east to the 10, then I get off at Chandler Blvd.  It's about 16 miles, it takes me 15-20 minutes (depending on lights). The only time I hit traffic is the 10-Maricopa traffic from Chandler Blvd. to Queen Creek/347 (and that's only a mile or two).

I use to work at University and the 143, I hated driving the 10!

  • Thank you so much for asking this.  Now I'm writing all the highways to avoid down. LOL!

Ha!  That would be all of them between the hours of 6am-9am and 3pm-7pm.  Freeways here suck!

  • I am crazy, I live in Queen Creek and work in Central Phoenix so my drive is about 56 miles each way.  I do really love my job so I can't complain too much.  Luckly we are starting to work from home 1 day a week effective next week so this will help.  I do carpool sometimes with one of our trainers when she is in town.

Well, maybe him and don can carpool soon :)

When I was working it was about 5 miles each way. The job I had before that I quit mostly because of the commute, 37 miles each way. Not a fan of spending 2 hours a day in my car

  • My current commute isn't that bad.  It's about 10-15 miles, but takes me 20-30 minutes because I have to take Grand Ave.  Blahh.   I'm just happy i don't have to drive on the 202(north not south end) much anymore since there is always so much construction - that highway is a major pain.

I used to live in South Tempe and worked at a museum downtown...man that was sucky.  I actually ended up taking the train once it started up to save on the gas.  It was still an hour each way, but I could read the entire time, it was very relaxing.  I miss riding the train.

  • Well, I'm going to try to not bring in all my dirty laundry about my current job situation....

But I drove about 35-40 minutes each way to get to my school that I teach at (that is a pretty long commute for Tucson).  It was absolutely worth it to me because I loved my school dearly and didn't want to teach anywhere else.

I also kind of love driving.  It's my "me" time.  This probably stems from growing up in Phoeinx, living in the northwest valley, driving every day to ASU, and then up to north Scottsdale, and then back home to 67th ave & Happy Valley area when I was going to school full time and work basically full time (32 hours per week).  Pretty much when I was in my car, it was my time to not be doing homework, or working, and just listening to music and destressing.  So, I don't mind commutes because I'm used to them.  And some days kind of am glad for them.  =)

  • I am not sure how many miles it is, but I drive about 30 minutes to work.  Thankfully, I can take Cotton down to Northern and then to 91st Ave. instead of taking Grand.
