best type of mulch??

I have not researched this too much yet, but is there a best type of mulch to use?

I need something that won't blow away too easily.

Some store have cypress mulch on sale but I've read that one is not too good cause too many trees are being harvested in FL or something like that

Re: best type of mulch??

  • We use large chip mulch, which is sometimes labeled bark mulch or nuggets.  It looks like this:

It looks really nice, and lets air and water to the root zone of our plants while discouraging weeds.  It provides better air circulation than shredded mulch like cypress, which I think has helped our plants a lot. I honestly have no idea how EF it is, we only use 2-3 bags a year for our small townhouse front yard.

  • those look like something my dog would love to chew on! lol
  • We're going to be using shredded leaves this year.  We already have a large amount of leaves we have to rake up so shredding them with a lawn mower isn't much more work.  Each year you just apply a new layer and the bottom layers become what is known as leaf mold (aka. black gold in the gardening world).  I'm not sure about the blowing away problem though because we're pretty sheltered here.
