Small, pretty shrubs for shady area in zone 5?

What can I get that is pretty easy and will not get too big? I'd love flowering shrubs, and actually really like Forsythias, but they get pretty big, if I remember correctly.

I really don't like Arborvitae, Boxwood, Yew and Juniper. That's what we pulled out last year. Ugh.

Thank you!

  • Weigela is a pretty little shrub.  You can get it in several different flower colors.  Spirea is another one, but I'm not a fan because I don't think they look very pretty when they are done flowering.  There are also dwarf lilacs that stay pretty small.  We have a couple of those and they smell wonderful in spring!
  • Ditto Weigela.  It comes in several interesting varieties.

There is a thread a few posts down where people made some great suggestions to me for small shade-tolerant flowering shrubs. I ended up going with PJM rhododendrons, which would work in your zone and only get about 3-4 feet wide.
