I listened to animal, vegetable, miracle and omnivore's dilemma as audio books. As interesting as they BOTH were, I honestly don't think I could have finished them if I'd actually tried to read them in print (vs. listening to them while stuck in traffic). They were both so detailed and at times dragged on so much (even though the vast majority of the info was super compelling).

I have In Defense Of Food and I'm going to start reading (paper version) tonight.

Yes...I know that was no help to you at all :)

  • I've read all three, and I recommend either going 1, 3, 2 or 3, 2, 1.  I adored AVM and read it twice.  It is detailed but it's so informative.  It was also more entertaining than any of Michael Pollan's books.  I love him, but his style is drier than Barbara Kingsolver's.
  • I love AVM! Just got DH to read it, and he's all cute and fired up about his food now. :)

I'd start with that b/c it seems lighter than the others, at least in my opinion. Then I'd go for one of the heavier reads.

  • I've read AVM and Omnivore's Dilemma, so I can't help with the other. But I'm going to agree with the others, that reading AVM is a good place to start. It is lighter, but also has a lot of really great info. Having said that I loved loved Omnivore's Dilemma. It was the first one I read and really started it all for me. So I think it's an important read.

  • It's funny, but I couldn't get into AVM.  I just thought there was too much gardening information- hehe, which is obviously a plus but at the time I wasn't thinking about starting a garden.

I loved Omnivore's Dilemma- it was the first one I read but I had to return it to the library before I could finish the last section on gathering.

I also really liked In Defense of Food.  It does cover some of the things talked about in Omnivore's Dilemma but it was a quicker read than OD for me.

  • I read all three and loved all three.  I would read the Omnivore's Dilemma before In Defense of Food since they were written in that order and fit together better if you read them that way.  Michael Pollan's last book is Food Rules, which is short and really cute.  I really liked AVM, I've read it several times.  It's a great mix of the author's thoughts on food life, plus gardening wisdom, farming news, and raising children on local food.  All three books are great, good choices!

  • I would read AVM first! Its the most fun and enjoyable! I wouldn't say it was detailed at all or went on and on...maybe it just seemed like that in audio.
