Ok so I may get a hard drive to store our large amounts of photos...

(and by the way, thanks for all of your responses to my photo storage questions).

So,

1. where can I research which is the best brand to buy?

And,

2. compare sizes for comparison (we have a small fireproof safe which I'm currently keeping the small capacity flash drive in that I'd like to be able to store it)?

It appears that I can get more space for storing photos on a hard drive than a similarly-priced flash drive...no? ALTHOUGH, the hard drive would be much larger and hence not as portable. Is this correct?

Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.

  • Newegg, CDW, Insight

There are some hard drives that aren't that large and can be plugged in via usb and don't need there own power supply. A good one is Rugged made by Lacie. Comes in a durable case very shock proof and durable.

  • I 2nd Newegg if you want to look for reviews you can also look at Cnet. I was able to pick up 1 trig a few months about for a little over $100. It's a HP but so far I have had no problems ... that remained me I need to do a back up :)

  • I generally stick to Western Digital when it comes to external harddrives. They have two lines. The MyPassport is a slim, very portable external. By portable, I mean that it has a single cable for data transfer and power. The MyBook line has two cables (data and power).

    Newegg

I'd go with an external hard drive - flash drive is so limited.  500GB minimum and defintely nothing less than 7200 RPM.  No brand recommendation. Some brands have a warranty if you'd prefer, but they are often higher in price.

  • Do you have a Costco membership? They have good deals on external HDs sometimes. I have used Western Digital and MyPassport in the past and both are great.

  • I would recommend getting an external hard drive over a flash drive.  You can store more on a hard drive, and you will be able to store it in your fireproff safe.  A good brand to buy is either Segate or Western Digital.
