Whats all this talk that I'm hearing about having your IUD being expelled by the uterus in women who haven't yet had children? One of my friends even said that the uterus does it by having contractions as if you are in labor, eventually getting the IUD to come down and out. Is this common?
I'm about to pay about $400 out of pocket for that damn IUD and I don't want it coming out until I'm good and ready!
Re: IUD question
That's why if you haven't had children, your doc will likely measure your uterus to make sure its big enough (I think 4 cm tall is the lower limit - mine was like 4.25 cm). That indicates whether your uterus may expel it or not. And even in women that have had kids, expulsion is still possible.
I don't think it's common, and since docs usually err on the side of extreme caution regarding IUDs (many won't even insert IUDs in women that have not had children!), if your doc hasn't said anything, I wouldn't worry about it.
Well, I'm 34 never had kids and I've had an IUD for a year and a half now. No problems other than heavier periods and bad cramps.
BTW, $400 is a good price. Mine was $750 (no insurance).

This. I googled mirena. HUGE mistake. People hardly ever put good experiences on the internet.
If you are going to look on the internet for information, google IUD Divas. They have a wealth of information on there, and it isn't just a bunch of horror stories.
I've never had kids (NP) and my Paragard has stayed in place for a couple of months already. Most IUD's that expel will do so in the first few months/first year, and I've heard that if it expels within three months you can get a free replacement IUD from the company because it will be listed as a 'product failure'. But you'd have to ask your doctor for more on that. If it helps any, I'm very happy with my IUD! Good luck!
