manure question :-)

While running errands today, we passed a dairy farm that had a huge pile of cow manure for sale for $0.50 per bucket.  I couldn't resist -- I really wanted some good fertilizer for our garden this year.  Our dirt is pretty hard clay right now.  I got six big buckets full, and am planning to go back for more.

In a few weekends, right before we plant (I'm in MI, so we have several weeks yet) I plan to rototill it into the ground.  Is there anything else I should do with said manure before planting?  It is pretty fresh.  Is there any chance that it would be too _____ (acidic, strong, etc..) to plant in?

 TIA!

My grandmother always layers fresh cow manure with straw in a pile for several months before using it.  Or she works it into the ground in the fall for spring planting.  She said it would burn the plants if it was fresh.

  • You might just google and see how long it has to compost before you can lose it.  I laid chicken poop one year and it just had to sit for a month or something.
