probably a really dumb beginner's Q

So DH and I have officially begun to widen the tiny little garden area in our backyard. This is the first time we've done anything relating to gardening or digging up our yard. My question is, what do you do with the grass and plants that you want to remove?

The old owners left a large sandbox behind our garage and I was thinking maybe we just start a pile back there? The sandbox was just laid in over the grass and has garden timbers separating it from the yard. I don't want to ruin any of our grass and taking it to the yard waste facility seems like a complete pain since we both drive cars.

Yeah I feel stupid for asking this question... but I'm not sure what to do! Thanks!

Re: probably a really dumb beginner's Q

  • is the sand contained in an actual box or did they section off a square and fill it with sand sp the grass is underneath?  I bought a house that had an existing sandbox, but I didn't have kids or a need for it, so I used it as a dumping ground like you're suggesting.  Grass/weeds started to grow but it was it was impossible to mow because of the sand so it turned into a huge mess.  Then, in our new house, we moved piles of grass from the backyard to a section on the side of the house and now that we want to move it, it's a small nightmare.  I think we're going to buy a lot of lawn bags and fill them in small amounts to put them at the curb for the garbage men.  I don't know what else to do with it.  I guess before you move your stuff to the sandbox, you should make sure you're never going to want to use that space again.  The lesson I learned is do it the right way the first time or it'll just be harder the next time. good luck.
