if the stores are selling herbs and veggie flats, are they OK to buy and keep outside?

if the stores are selling herbs and veggie flats, are they OK to buy and keep outside? I am not going to put them in the ground yet. I am not ready to buy veggie plants yet. But I wanted to buy the herbs and put them in this herb tower that I am making that I saw in Martha Stewart Living. The herbs must be sitting out a night at the farm stand stores right? or maybe they move them inside? they are out there all day though and they look fine. thoughts? I am just north of Boston, MA if that matters. last year I didn't plant until after Mothers day. But that was in my raised bed. but I felt that it was slim pickens when I went to finally buy and want to buy now since there are so many selections right now. I don't have a grow light or anything to use if I bring them inside. TIA!

  • I can't answer your question since I live in a moderate climate---but I did that same tower from Martha Stewart and it looks great! I love it.

  • I would be nervous to do that just yet.  My kitchen table is currenly covered in tomato plants and cukes.  :)

I think overnight they wheel them in or drape the racks.

I'm also in a moderate climate, but if you are handy at all, you might be able to get away with it (in the flats) in a cold frame until time to move them outside.  Especially if you lined the frame with Coke bottles full of water for heat storage during the day.  DH built this one for me this year, using a recycled window: http://www.canadianhomeworkshop.com/index.php?ci_id=2648&la_id=1

  • I live in the valley in the Great White North of Washington and so far have only been brave enough to put out my tomatoes in Walls O Water.  I'd probably be ok with planting lettuce and sugar snap peas as well.  But I'm waiting on flowers and herbs because night time temps are still pretty low.

  • I don't think it means they're safe to plant yet.

    I found this calendar handy:

I just adjust for the last frost date for my area. (You can google that.)

I'm in CO and just put up walls of water today and will transplant my tomatoes in a couple of days.

  • not safe to plant yet. They've been selling tomatoes for over a month and the historical last frost in my area was today.
  • In the past, I've bought early for the reasons you said.  Sometimes by the time planting season is here in June, I can't find the varieties I want.  If I see what I want, I'll get it and just watch the temps but I don't plant them.  If a frost is coming, I'll either bring them inside or put the plants up on my patio and cover them with either a sheet or plastic.
