XP: Sharing a CSA

I would love to get a share of CSA this year.  (Community Supported Agriculture).  I think my community has a good farm and active group.  Unfortunately, they do not offer 1/2 shares and I don't think we can use all of the veggies we would get each week. My neighbor suggested possibly doing a share together.  She and her family are wonderful and I think that would be great!

Anyone try this with success?  I was thinking that each household would pick a box up every other week.  It might be simplier than splitting the context of a box every week.

Any suggestions?  Things we should keep in mind?

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.

Re: XP: Sharing a CSA

  • We are hoping to do this this year too. We are going to do the every other week plan, much easier in my mind than having to get together each week and split things up (and what if the other person doesn't like something, etc.).  And that way if you're out of town you can swap weeks and not miss a week too. We had a full share last summer because my little sister and her boyfriend were living with us, and were sad to give it up this year until it occurred to us we could split it (we have a garden that keeps us stocked on a lot of veggies, but I love the variety of the CSA--and having to learn how to cook new things to use the CSA veggies).
  • I've not done it (we have a couples share of our CSA) but my friend split hers with her inlaws and it worked out great. Definitely do the every-other-week thing, as you might get an odd number or just one of something and you can't split that evenly.

Good luck! We love doing our CSA!

  • We did this with bil and sil a couple years ago. It worked out really well. We would alternate picking up the box and then split everything evenly. The only downer was when there was only a little of something (like strawberries and peaches). But a lot of times, we would just buy a little extra at their farmstand to make up the difference.

  • I did every-other-week witha  friend of mine.  It worked really well (better than trying to split the box each week IMO).  Often we would get 1 melon, 1 cucumber, etc.  I didn't want to be cutting things in half or trying to decide the relative value of different stuff.
  • We did a full share every other week with a friend.  We picked it up (and kept it all) one week, and she did the following week.  It was easy and we were able to use everything we got.  If we'd had the whole share to ourselves, it would've been WAY too much.
  • we are doing it this year. with another couple. we are just going to split everything every week, but also if we like something they don't and vice versa we will also work around that. depending on who wants what. we are really excited!! plus these are like our best friends, so we are happy about having a "date" every week to split everything up! its both of our first times joining a csa
