XP: How do I keep the bugs away?

There are lots of bugs in my backyard, and I would like to enjoy my time outside without getting bitten up or using lots of bug spray.

A guy at Home Depot recommended Citronella candles.  Do these work well?

  • They work, though the smell is not very appealing to me. Cosmetics Database rates Citronella as pretty safe at 1-2.

  • Yeah! They are great! We get the posts and light them up in the evening during our Family parties during the summer!
  • Lavendar and mint work with some bugs, too.

  • bird feeders, bird baths, bat houses and foliage to encourage birds/bats to come in your yard and hopefully eat the bugs while they are there.
  • I don't think there's really one answer so much as its a lot of things added to together.

You want to reduce where they can breed of course, so keep bushes and weeds trimmed, etc and get rid of any standing water.

You can buy beneficial nematodes to spray or good bugs to release that fo after pest bugs. Be careful where you buy them though a lot of places sell them and they haven't been cared for properly.

Spraying neem on your yard may help. I use it several times through the season to keep fleas away but I think it has other repelling properties. I use a product from OrganixSouth.

Also planting bug repellent plants and bushes - marigolds, herbs, etc can help.

I think your area factors in a lot too. We don't have many bugs here! It rains too much for a lot of them to breed. So you will still need stuff like a citronella candle, etc.

  • Our gardener will be using some cedar oil product that is all-natural. No pesticides, safe for animals, etc. It works well on chiggers, too.

We live in the southeast, so the bugs can get unbearable during the summer. It's so bad I don't even like going out in my backyard! I'm exciting to see how this product works. Apparently a lot of the people in our area use it and love it.
