Low maintenance flowering bushes?

When we first moved into our house there were green, non-flowering bushes in the front, and more in the back, essentially lining the house. I may have overestimated my gardening ability, but I pulled all those bushes out to put in flowers.

At this point I have no time, and I can't seem to keep some of the flowers alive anyway. Are there any pretty, flowering bushes I can plant that are low maintenance? I don't mind weeding/watering, I know I can't get out of that, but I don't want to have to actively worry about keeping whatever I plant alive. The back of the house gets about 6-8 hours of sun a day, the front only gets a couple hours. I would prefer that they stay in the small-medium range. Nothing too large.

I'm in southern Indiana, so our hardiness zone is 6a.

Thanks in advance!

I suspect you may have pulled out euonymous - which I don't actually mind.  They are a great low maintainance plant, inexpensive, and will stay green in the winter.   But, in the event you did not pulled out euonymous and decide you don't necessarily need a flowering shrub, then consider this option.  You could also plants some low maintence annuals (flowers) around them for colour.

For a flowering shrub, I love hydrangeas.

  • Azaleas and all rhododendrons will do well in your front yard since it gets so little sun.  In the back, you have a much wider array.  If you go to a garden center they will be able to tell you what works well in your area with minimal maintenance.
  • I was going to suggest azaleas for your front yard, too. We have azaleas in our front yard (also gets little sun) and they have done great. I can't wait to see them bloom this year.

I looked those up, I don't think it's what we pulled out...the leaves looked different...

I have a hydrangea now (I love them too!) but it hasn't ever flowered. Which I'm sure is all me, I have zero gardening skills. Smile

Thanks for all the info, ladies! I will look in to all your suggestions!
