Best Camera for Novice Photography

Hi Ladies: With our little one on the way, I'm looking into some cameras that will allow me to capture some nice photographs. We have a small digital camera that is great to stick in my purse, etc. but I'm thinking of a Nikon D60 for some more 'professional' shots.

Can anyone recommend something that will be easy to use and will suffice for these purposes?

 TIA!

Last fall I got a Nikon D3000 when it was first released. It is now the entry level DSLR for Nikon, but it has a lot of the better features of the previous higher-end models. It's automatic features work incredibly well, so it's really easy to get started with it. It also has a menu that walks you through settings for different settings (portrait, night, action, etc.) It can be put into manual mode if/when you decide to learn more details about photography, but it's really easy to get the hang of in the beginning. I'd recommend the kit with the 18-55mm zoom lens. You need to buy a memory card separately.

  • Thanks so much! I'm definitely going to look into that model.
  • I've got a Canon Rebel XSI. Any level of Rebel is a safe bet. I've never used a Canon before and it was very easy to figure out.

  • I also bought the Nikon D3000 last week and I am absolutely happy with my choice. I really like photography but I'm new at it so this camera is working out well for me.

  • Hi!  I'm trying to do research into a DSLR camera as well and somebody reminded me that with Nikons you can switch out the lenses but not with the Canons. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me on this.  So that's something else to think about.  I'm leaning towards the D3000 as well.

  • The only thing that you have to watch on the D3000 is that the AF isn't built into the camera itself but the actual len so if you decide to purchase a len you need to make sure it has AF.
